Sample answer
The environmental issue that concerns me most is plastic pollution, particularly single-use plastic in the ocean.
It's significant because plastic doesn't really disappear; it breaks down into tiny particles called microplastics, which have been found in fish, drinking water and even in human blood. In coastal communities, plastic waste damages fishing and tourism, which many families depend on. And because so much of it comes from everyday items like bottles and packaging, almost everyone contributes to the problem.
In terms of solutions, I think action needs to happen at several levels. Governments can ban or tax unnecessary single-use items, as many countries have done with plastic bags, and require companies to take responsibility for recycling their packaging. Businesses can switch to refill systems and better materials. Individually, people can carry reusable bottles and bags and support local clean-up campaigns, although individual action alone isn't enough.
This issue matters for future generations because once plastic is in the ocean, it's almost impossible to remove. If we don't reduce it now, our children will inherit less healthy seas and food chains that are already contaminated.
