History: Who should protect the environment?

Some people say that environmental problems are too big for individuals to solve and that only governments and large companies can make a real difference.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Approach: A partly-agree position is fine, but it must be precise: say exactly what you agree with and what you do not. Avoid sitting on the fence.

Climate change, plastic pollution and the loss of biodiversity are problems on a global scale, and it is tempting to conclude that individual actions are meaningless in comparison. I partly agree with this view: governments and corporations hold the greatest power to reduce environmental damage, but individuals still play an essential role.

It is undeniable that the largest share of environmental harm comes from systems that individuals do not control. Energy production, industry, agriculture and transport account for most greenhouse gas emissions, and only governments can change these systems at scale, for example by investing in renewable energy, setting emissions limits and funding public transport. Similarly, large companies decide how products are designed, packaged and shipped. A single consumer who avoids plastic bags makes little difference if manufacturers continue to wrap everything in plastic. Expecting individuals alone to solve these problems is therefore unrealistic.

However, it would be wrong to conclude that individuals are powerless. Firstly, millions of small choices, such as eating less meat, flying less or insulating homes, add up to a measurable impact. More importantly, individuals influence governments and businesses. Citizens vote for politicians who support environmental policies, and consumer demand has pushed many companies to offer greener products. Public pressure was, for instance, a major factor behind bans on single-use plastics in many countries.

In conclusion, while I agree that governments and large corporations must lead the response to environmental problems, individuals are not irrelevant. Their everyday choices and, above all, their political and economic pressure are often what drives those in power to act.
