History: An ageing population
In many countries, the proportion of older people in the population is steadily increasing.
Does this trend have more positive or negative effects on society?
Approach: Treat this like an 'outweigh' question: present both effects, then decide which is greater and explain why.

Thanks to better healthcare and falling birth rates, many societies are ageing rapidly, with older people forming an ever larger share of the population. Although this trend creates real economic challenges, I believe its negative effects are greater than its positive ones unless governments adapt their policies.
There are certainly positive aspects. Longer life expectancy is itself a sign of social progress. Many older people remain healthy and active well into their seventies, and they contribute to society in valuable ways: they volunteer, care for grandchildren so that parents can work, and pass on skills and experience. In some fields, such as teaching and consultancy, experienced older workers are highly valued.
However, the economic consequences are significant. As the number of retired people grows relative to the working-age population, fewer workers must support more pensioners through their taxes. Healthcare spending also rises sharply, because older people are more likely to need long-term treatment and care. This places enormous pressure on public finances and may force governments to raise taxes, reduce pensions or cut other services. In addition, some industries face labour shortages as large numbers of workers retire at the same time.
These problems are not impossible to solve. Raising the retirement age gradually, encouraging flexible work for older people, and investing in preventive healthcare can all reduce the burden. Nevertheless, these measures require difficult political decisions, and many countries have been slow to make them.
In conclusion, although an ageing population brings social benefits and reflects improved living standards, its economic pressures currently outweigh these advantages. How serious the negative effects become will depend largely on how quickly governments respond.
